Sometime in 2018, Apple is coming out with its own AirPower charging station which will charge your iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch at the same time. This will require you to spend $69 to get a wireless charging case for your AirPods. This is on top of what AirPower mat will cost. But if you already have a Qi charger, you can get the same wireless charging functionality on your AirPods for as little as $3.

To do this, we’re going to be using an iPhone compatible charging pad, some scotch tape and a cheap silicon case for the AirPods to make it nice and tidy.

Here’s what you’ll need to buy: $2 Wireless Charging Pad | $1 AirPods Case.

Step 1: Unpack the Charging Pad

Once you’ve bought the $2 Charging Pad, it’s time to remove its outer layer.

It’s glued together with a bit of adhesive. Use your nails to pry open the cover from the top and then gently remove the entire plastic cover.

What you’ll be left with are a copper charging coil, the electronics board, and a short Lightning cable.

Step 2: Wrap Charging Pad on AirPods

Unpack one layer of the copper coil so that there’s a bit of distance between the coil and the board.

Then wrap the copper coil on one side of the AirPods case, the board on the other and connect the Lighting cable to the bottom of the AirPods case.

Now, take some scotch tape and stick the board and the copper wire to the AirPods. Put the AirPods on your Qi charger (with the coil facing downwards) to check if the AirPods are charging.

Step 3: Put On The Silicon Case

To make it look good, just put this entire setup in the $1 Silicon Case.

That’s it, your wireless AirPods setup is ready. If you don’t already have a Qi charging pad, get one for just a couple of dollars.
