iOS 9 is set to be released sometime this fall and it holds a nice bundle of features like an upgraded Siri, new keyboard, and better battery life. For the first time since, well ever, Apple has made beta releases for iOS 9 available to not only developers but also the public. If you haven’t already signed up to be part of the public preview check this out; and for those who have, let’s see exactly what you need to do to install this on your device.

How to install iOS 9 public beta

Step 1.

As as a member of the beta program you will have received an email to the address you signed up with. Inside of this email there will be a link, “Go to the Apple Beta Software Program” where you will download and install the iOS 9 software update.

Step 4.

Back up your device. Anytime you are installing software that is still in beta it’s always wise to create a new backup just in case something goes wrong or you want to switch back to your previous iOS. Instead of a regular backup, you will need to create an archived backup for your device.

Archive iOS

Archive an iOS Backup

  • Plug-in your device using the USB cord and open iTunes.
  • Click on the iPhone in the menu bar and in the Summary tab under Backups, click “This Computer”.

iTunes - Summary

  • Click “Back Up Now” to back up the device.
  • Once the device is backed up, go to Preferences -> Devices and select your recent backup.

iTunes Preferences

  • Right-click and choose Archive in the small pop-up menu.

  • Archiving your iOS backup will keep it stored and safe, even if you create newer iOS 9 backups.

Step 5.

After archiving your iOS backup you will need to download the profile. Tap on the “Download profile” button to go to the install profile page. From that page, tap “Install” in the top-right corner. Read the Consent Message, and tap install once, and then one more time at the bottom of your screen. You will need to restart your device.

 Step 6.

After your device restarts go over to Settings -> General -> Software Update, and find the iOS 9 Public Beta 1 download.  If it is not there immediately after restart, wait a few minutes and check back in. Once the update is downloaded, tap Install and your device will restart and install the iOS as it would any other.
