iPhone firmware 2.0 hacked

Would you believe it?

The iPhone Dev Team has done it again, Gizmodo is reporting that they have already jailbroken and unlocked iPhone firmware 2.0 which was released only a few hours back.

Its probably the shortest time the iPhone dev team has taken to hack iPhone firmware.

You can get the details of the breaking news after the jump.

When I had written about the progress the iPhone hacking community had made in hacking iPhone firmware 2.0 (which would be running on iPhone 3G), I had summarized that we still didn’t have a confirmation that 3G iPhone can be hacked, but had pointed out that the iPhone hacking community had done some ground work by trying out their methods with pre-release iPhone firmware and seemed to be quite confident that they will stay ahead of this cat and mouse game.

It seems like all the ground work has helped as Jesus Diaz of Gizmodo has apparently been using his iPhone running iPhone firmware 2.0 which has been jailbroken and unlocked to work on Vodafone UK since last week (currently the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the UK is 02). The iPhone firmware 2.0 running on his iPhone was version 5A345, two versions below 5A347 which was released today but both are idential when it comes to functionality.

He has also been able to try out some of the new features of Apple’s latest iPhone firmware.

iPhone Dev Team are expected to release their Pwnage tool for everyone to unlock and jailbreak their iPhones soon since the iPhone firmware 2.0 has finally been released (it is being reported that they are running some final tests and could take a couple of days).

If you are new to the iPhone hacking world then iPhone Dev Team’s released the Pwnage tool to simplify the hacking process, all you needed to do was flash the iPhone with
custom iPhone firmware to jailbreak it to install and run unofficial native iPhone applications and also unlock the iPhone to use it in any compatible GSM networks.

This is good news for all those who wanted their favorite unofficial native iPhone apps but did not want to miss out of the features of iPhone firmware 2.0.

Now that we have proof (thanks to Jesus Diaz) that iPhone firmware 2.0 can be hacked, there is just one more puzzle to be solved, that is, to see if the iPhone Dev Team’s Pwnage tool will be able to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G running on iPhone firmware 2.0 when its available tomorrow.

So stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks to find out.
